JOANES
Joanes or the Basque whaler is inspired by two of the oldest known texts to be produced in North America, the last wills and testament of Juanes de Larrume and Joanes de Echaniz, Basque whalers who died in Canada in the years 1577 and 1584.
From an undeniable historical point of departure the story intertwines elements of the Basque mythology, while narrating the drama of a ficticious Joanes through a thrilling journey through the annals of the emblematic transatlantic epic of the Basque whalers.
An important symbol equivalent to that of the American cowboy or its western analogues we find in the scandinavian Viking, or the Japanese samurai.
The character, is imperfect and human, an archetype of anti-hero, that represents the internal struggle between the dark side and the clean, in a journey of self-discovery and personal transformation where the dark side pushes by exit but that the protagonist resists it. A pattern quite real that typically is not a quality in most traditional heroes.
